Let us know your favorite superhero. I can't settle on one so let me just send some that I've actually read the comics for: Daredevil, The Question, and... actually that might just be it

for me it's gotta be spider-man (peter, sorry miles), zot, jack staff, andddddddd.... superman! i just love spider-man so much i can't help it.

oh, will, what daredevil comics have you read? any recommendations? i've only read a few issues here and there-- frank mazzucchelli draws beautiful comics, his daredevil is great

The most recent Daredevil comic I've been reading is the 2019 release that Marco Checchetto and Chip Zdarsky worked on. I love the art in it. Some of my other favorites are Daredevil Noir and of course Daredevil: Born Again

i've heard some great things about zdarsky's daredevil! mostly that the spider-man appearances in it are great, hehehe. maybe i'll check it out! that is, if i can pull myself away from amazing fantasy 1000 (it comes out tomorrow )

What's Amazing Fantasy 1000? I'm not up to date with a lot of comics that are coming out in modern times, though I am curious about the new Damage Control and Miracleman series Marvel is putting out pretty soon.

I am also a pretty big Spider-Man fan, but I haven't read a lot of the important arcs. Somewhat arbitrarily chosen as my number one absolute favorite would be Ron Lithgow, A.K.A. Concrete. If he does count as a superhero, that is. I could call him one, but it's not exactly right. A character I find very similar to him would be Harry Vanderspeigle/Hah-re from Resident Alien, and I wouldn't call HIM a superhero.

But where does the limit lie? Is Shigeo Kageyama/Mob a superhero? He does more superheroics than Ron Lithgow, but he doesn't wear spandex. Neither does The Question, though.

The term superhero could be taken in a variety of ways, which is why I intentionally had my question be so vague. I think my definition of what makes a superhero falls under a basic "Helps others at the expense of themselves" moral code. Some characters could be considered heroic but they wouldn't necessarily be a super hero. What do you think qualifies someone as a Super Hero?

I think a major part of what makes a superhero is the presentation. comic book superheroes usually wear bright and colourful costumes (at least, they used to anyways) and there are usually some familiar tells. knee-high boots, trunks, capes, masks, chest-emblems, etc. i was tempted to say it's a matter of intent-- whether or not you meant for a character to be a superhero-- but really that's going to come out in the presentation isn't it

I usually let the series sort of define the hero. I guess that's not really intuitive, but you just kind of KNOW if somebody is a superhero. I guess it really mostly has to do with specific zeitgeists, largely American. If a character is in a(n American) comic and they have powers, they're a superhero. If they're in a TV show and they have powers, and some other powered people in that show have costumes, they're a superhero. Really, I don't think about this kind of thing, but it's like, some people might get mad if you called Sonic the Hedgehog a superhero.

It's also a matter of context. If I'm hanging at a comic convention, I'm not gonna say say that Spongebob is my favorite superhero. They're expecting capes and spandex. I think your vague rules are better for an online discussion like this, though. Plus I just like the unexpected answers.

i think the story itself absolutely defines whether a character is a superhero or not, yeah.

also, mine are Hellboy and Jack Staff! Despite the surface-level seimilarities in grist and mignola's inking, they are radically different heroes and stories and both are awesome off-colour takes on a superhero.

ive never read any hellboy but ive watched the 2004 guillermo del toro movie and really enjoyed that one. i count him as one of my favorites because whenever i see hellboy online im like "fuck yes i love that guy"

i'll count looking glass from the 2019 watchmen series as a superhero, since for all intents and purposes for part of the show he DOES use a secret identity to fight crime. hes a really good character
