Should I listen to....

Post by Deacon Blues »

i hear a lot of people recommend stuff to listen to online and i was curious if any of it was worth a shot. and i'm sure other people hear stuff too and are all like "should i listen to such and such band is it even worth it" so i figured i should start a topic about that. anyways,

last night i was out with some friends and one of them mentioned shoegaze. it kind of sounds like the sort of thing i'd like, but i feel like i've heard people rag on it a bit online so i was curious about that. anyhoo, should i listen to shoegaze?

I had no idea what shoegaze was before reading this but it doesn't sound too bad. I dunno if it's something I'd get REALLY into, you know? It just seems like good "have it on while you work" music. If I'm being honest it kind of reminds me of Molchat Doma... 'cept shoegaze has more of a pop influence and sounds more ethereal than Molchat Doma

I love shoegaze, but them not recommending ANY bands, just the genre, is really unfortunate. My favorite accessible shoegaze band is probably Curve, specifically the album Come Clean, aptly named because it's less pure shoegaze and closer to Industrial or Techno in some places. It's just a really good genre for people who love intense music. If you like Come Clean, Curve's Cuckoo is a great album too.

Favorite track from Come Clean: KILLER BABY
https://youtu.be/L1lKVqNG5RY
Curve at their smoothest and most menacing. Like all the best Curve songs, there is a wonderful and varied wall of sound to drown in. Like the best of Come Clean, there's a heavy techno and edm influence and mastery of buildup and closure.

Favorite track from Cuckoo: SUPERBLASTER
https://youtu.be/Uh25cWav6Xs
Buttery guitar, hypnotic vocals, drums half-buried in the sand. While killer baby and some of the others off Come Clean are almost wet with sound, SUPERBLASTER is an overwhelming sandstorm or drought trying to swallow the bloody vocals. Excellent fucking song.
