TV Gushing Central Station

Post by Meatman »

Making a new topic for general TV appreciation so we dont flood out with specific TV shows all the time.

anyways, I just finished the second season finale of Reservation Dogs last night and I am pretty comfortable in saying that it is one of the single best shows currently airing. and i never fucking see anybody talk about it! in short, it's an FX original show about four teens on a reservation in oklahoma who are reckoning with the very recent death of a close friends. It's one of the funniest, most original, most thoughtful shows i have ever seen and i seriously implore you all to watch it if you have hulu and dig funny dramas.

I watched like 2 or so episodes two summers ago, but then school started up and I didn't watch any more of it. I don't even know if I got to the recent death of close friends, though maybe I just forgot that. I think my dad finished all of it though, and liked it.

i think it's addressed in the first episode, but sort of becomes more important in like the third or fourth. i really would recommend giving it a second chance though, when you have more time!

i've slowly been making my way through the first season of twin peaks, and it's great! and there is lots i like about it, which i guess is kind of redundant since i just said it's great. for one thing, it was filmed in washington which is pretty close to where i live, so a lot of the scenery is really similar to stuff i've seen in my life! douglas firs and mountains and lakes and the pavement just after rainfall, it's swell.

and the writing is good too, but in this kind of on-the-nose way. it's sort of like an old comic where sometimes someone will just say something so dramatic and over-the-top but it's said with such sincerity that it feels completely real. i love stuff like that because you hardly see it these days, there's just such a commitment to dialogue that is supposed to sound real or casual. usually this just ends up without the charm of the prosey stuff like in twin peaks, but also without the charm of improvised, conversational stuff. like in mtv's downtown which was this cartoon from 1999 i just finished recently. all the voicework was excellent and sounded so natural, i have no clue why more cartoons and shows don't do that.

anyways, moving on from that tangent, there's also the fact that the show just looks great. at the risk of sounding like a hipster, i think film looks a lot better than digital, generally. like all the colours are so beautiful and just pop out straight from the screen. i think film is better at capturing something closer to real life, because real life is quite colourful and not as greyed out as a lot of modern dramas are. it kind of reminds me of sam raimi's spider-man movies which also have this beautiful colour to them.

there is also the mystery, obviously. i know twin peaks gets like, way more obtuse and supernatural as it goes on, but i'm enjoying the closer-to-life mystery with that touch of spiritualism going on in the first season. it makes you want to learn about tibet and stuff. or write your own weird occult mystery! basically: twin peaks is great. oh and dale cooper is a wonderful character, and his friendship with harry is nice. i like that the out-of-town lawman and local police chief get along.
